After setting up an equatorial mount, the Right Ascension (RA) axis is parallel to the Earth's rotation axis. To track celestial objects over a day, it is therefore sufficient to make a complete turn on this axis in 24 hours, rotating in the opposite direction of the Earth's rotation.

This is the whole advantage of the equatorial mount over the altazimuth mount. To do this, a fine adjustment knob or cable is generally used, but it is also possible to fully automate the rotation using a motor with a drive that operates at sidereal speed.
