For optimal use of an equatorial mount, it is essential to orient it so that its main axis is parallel to the Earth's rotation axis. In the Northern Hemisphere, this means it must point towards the celestial pole, located not far from the North Star.
Setting up
Setting up can be done quickly by roughly aligning the mount's axis towards the North Star, which is sufficient for standard observations. However, for increased accuracy, a polar scope is necessary.
Functioning of the polar scope
The Sky-Watcher polar scope is a small telescope on which the actual position of the celestial North Pole is engraved based on the date. This allows for a precise and quick setup.
Note: This model is specific to Sky-Watcher EQ5 and EQ6 type equatorial mounts.
