For optimal use of an equatorial mount, it is essential to orient it so that its main axis is parallel to the Earth's rotation axis. In the Northern Hemisphere, this means it must point towards the celestial pole, located not far from the North Star.

Setting up

Setting up can be done quickly by roughly orienting the mount's axis toward the North Star, which is sufficient for classic observations. However, for increased precision, a polar finder is necessary.

Operation of the polar finder

The Sky-Watcher polar finder is a small telescope on which the actual position of the celestial North Pole is engraved according to the date. This allows for precise and quick setup.
